An oil immersed transformer is a type of electrical transformer where the core and windings are fully submerged in insulating mineral oil. This oil plays two key roles: it cools the internal components and provides electrical insulation, making these transformers ideal for high-load, high-voltage applications such as power distribution, substations, and industrial facilities.


Why is oil immersion important in transformer design?


Heat is a major enemy of electrical efficiency and equipment longevity. The oil in an immersed transformer absorbs heat from the core and windings and then transfers it to the outer tank, where it’s released into the air—often with the help of radiators or cooling fins. This method allows the transformer to operate at higher capacities without overheating.


In addition to cooling, the oil also helps insulate components, preventing short circuits and enhancing the transformer's reliability. Some versions use natural ester or synthetic fluids for improved environmental performance and fire safety.


These transformers are typically more durable and capable of handling overloads compared to dry-type transformers, although they require regular maintenance such as oil testing and replacement.
